SHALSTONE - In the mid 1950’s a Neolithic axe was found in one of the fields of Manor Farm towards Welsh Lane. It is a ceremonial item which was ‘fashioned’ in the ‘axe factory’ near the Langdale Pikes in Cumbria. It would have been brought here as a prestigious present from a visiting tribe to their hosts and is judged to be about 5,000 years old – circa 3,000 BC. It is currently on display at the Old Gaol Museum and is reported to be the oldest artefact discovered in Buckinghamshire.
